PERIDOT has been mined as a gemstone for over 4000 years. This gem is available in just one color. Its greens range from bottle green to an olive green. Peridot often has inclusions which can be caused by the presence of small particles of Silica; occasionally you will find needle-like inclusions which are commonly referred to as Ludwig needles. It comes from Arizona, China, Africa and Pakistan. Given its resemblance to the color of money, peridot has often been associated with prosperity and good fortune. Ancient Egyptians called the peridot the “gem of the Sun,” as they believed it protected those who wore it from the terrors of the night. In addition to being the birthstone for August, it is associated with the star sign of Capricorn and used to celebrate the 16th wedding anniversary.
